Maersk Tankers has become one of the Group’s key growth areas.
The world’s demand for energy is significantly increasing. The International Energy Agency estimates that by 2030 the global demand for oil will have grown more than 30% to 120 million barrels per day. Furthermore, the International Maritime Organization’s phase out regulation of single hull tanker vessels will become effective by 2010. Together this underlines the positive business environment for the tanker market. It is in this light that Maersk Tankers’ upcoming merger with Brostrom and a considerable newbuilding program of more than 50 vessels should be seen, says Soren Skou, CEO of Maersk Tankers and member of the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group Executive Board.
The product tanker market is very fragmented with many small tanker companies operating only a few vessels. With a combined owned and long term chartered fleet of around 130 product tankers, the new joint company of Brostrom and Maersk Tankers will by far be the largest product tanker company in the world.
