Ex-cadets feedback: Anton Ivanov
Advice for future cadets:
This year I had my shipboard training onboard the vessel of A.P. Moller
Maersk Group. It was an oil/product tanker "Ribe Maersk" 35000 metric tones; and I was there for 6 months.
During this time I felt myself to be a full and valued member of crew and saw myself as part of a big family.
There were several nationalities onboard: Danes, Romanians, Filipinos and Ukrainians, etc. Obviously, circumstance gave great opportunities for gaining practical skills, particularly in English, both conversational and written. Besides, it is good opportunity to learn more about different nations, culture and mentalities.
During my cadetship I had 2 working periods of 6 days a week. The first period was from 0800 till 1200, where I worked on deck; there I learnt main aspects of cargo, mooring and anchoring operations. Gained practical experience of working with cargo systems, winches, cranes and other deck equipment. The second period was alternatively 1600-2000 or 2000-2400, it changed every month; which included navigation watch on the bridge. It was a time of exercising my theoretical knowledge obtained at the Academy. Here were observations, plotting, radio communications, passage planning, correction; using of navigation, radio and other useful bridge equipment, i.e. testing of GMDSS, celestial observations etc.
At port we had cargo watches, instead of navigational, which again helped to diversify. Here I observed and participated in cargo operations.
Sunday was always free.
Of course, not work was the only thing that took place. I also had enough time for leisure, recreation and much needed rest; and on board there were many opportunities for it - with a gymnasium room, small swimming pool, table tennis, racetrack; mess room with TV, and a DVD film library and karaoke.
In ports, where it was authorized, I went ashore. I've visited Tokyo, Singapore, Balikpapan (Indonesia), Laizhou (China), Batangas (Philippines), Nakhodka that really cover a big part of the Far East.
This entire period, in my opinion, was very purposeful in my life. For me I found plenty of new and interesting things. The sea, navigation, use of the ship's equipment, improved English, all while meeting many different peoples from around the globe. Seeing other countries and experiencing all that is needed to continue and prosper in this, my chosen field.
I loved this time, I truly miss everything about it and I advise all interested to undertake their cadetships at Maersk!
